Short answer: Most Brisbane homes install a 7 kW single-phase EV charger. A typical installed price is around $1,100 to $2,300 if your switchboard can handle it, or $1,900 to $4,500 if it needs an upgrade. From 1 October 2026, Energex no longer requires a network control device for a standard single-phase 32 amp home charger.

This guide covers which charger to choose, what drives the cost, the new Energex rules, and how to charge your car from your own solar.

Which home EV charger do you need?

There are three common ways to charge an electric car at home:

  • A normal power point. It works, but it is slow. Most drivers only use it as a backup.
  • A 7 kW single-phase wall charger. This is the right choice for most Brisbane homes. It can fill most cars overnight and suits a normal single-phase power supply.
  • A 22 kW three-phase charger. Only worth it if your home has three-phase power and your car can actually charge that fast. Many cars cannot.

We also recommend a smart charger. A smart charger connects to an app, lets you schedule charging, and can follow your solar so the car charges on sunshine instead of grid power.

How much does EV charger installation cost in Brisbane?

Published estimates for Brisbane in 2026 look like this:

  • The charger itself: about $700 to $1,600, depending on brand and smart features
  • Installation with no switchboard work: about $1,100 to $2,300 in total
  • Installation with a switchboard upgrade: about $1,900 to $4,500 in total

Solar Choice puts the national average for an installed home charger at about $2,100. A three-phase install usually adds a few hundred dollars in labour, plus the higher cost of the charger.

These are guides only. The real cost depends on your home.

What changes the price?

  • Your switchboard. Older boards may not have room or the right protection for a new circuit. A switchboard upgrade is the biggest extra cost.
  • Cable distance. A charger in a garage next to the switchboard is quick. A long run to a carport or across the house costs more.
  • Single or three phase. Three-phase chargers need three-phase power and cost more.
  • Your total power demand. Your electrician has to check the home can handle the extra load. If it cannot, network upgrades may be needed.

Energex rules for EV chargers changed on 1 October 2026

Until recently, Queensland homes installing a 7 kW charger had to either connect it to a network control device or limit it to 20 amps, which is about 4.6 kW.

From 1 October 2026, Energex and Ergon removed that rule. A single-phase 32 amp charger, which is about 7.4 kW, can now be installed without a network control device.

Two things have not changed:

  • Your electrician still has to calculate your home's maximum demand with the charger added.
  • If the extra load is more than your supply can handle, network upgrades and fees may apply.

If you already have a control device fitted, you can keep it or have it removed. Three-phase chargers have their own requirements, so ask us about your home.

The cheapest way to charge: your own solar

Charging from your own solar is the cheapest power you can put in your car. Feed-in tariffs in South East Queensland are now only a few cents per kWh, so using that power yourself is worth far more than exporting it. Our guide to Brisbane feed-in tariffs explains why.

Other low-cost ways to charge:

  • Controlled load tariffs. A hard-wired EV charger can go on an Energex controlled load tariff. Super Economy (Tariff 31) supplies power for at least 8 hours a day, and Economy (Tariff 33) for at least 16 hours.
  • The Solar Sharer window. Some retail plans now include three free hours of power a day, from 11am to 2pm.
  • A home battery. If the car is away during the day, a solar battery can store solar for overnight charging.

Are there EV charger rebates in Queensland?

There is no Queensland government rebate for home EV chargers in 2026. Queensland's old electric vehicle purchase rebate has also closed. Be wary of older ads that still mention it.
