Short answer: Queensland has no state battery rebate in 2026. Brisbane homes can still get the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount. Right now it takes about $2,600 off a 10 kWh battery. The discount drops again on 1 January 2027, so the same battery will cost more next year.
This guide explains how the discount works, what it is worth on the batteries most Brisbane homes buy, who can get it, and how to claim it. Figures are current as of October 2026.
What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a federal government discount on home and small business batteries. It started on 1 July 2025.
It works through the same certificate system that has made rooftop solar cheaper for years. Each eligible battery creates small-scale technology certificates, called STCs. Those certificates have a cash value. Your installer claims them and takes the value off your price.
You do not fill in a government form or wait for a refund. The discount simply shows up as a lower price on your quote. The government describes it as around 30% off the cost of a battery.
How much is the battery rebate worth in 2026?
The discount depends on two things: how much usable storage your battery has, and the date it is installed.
Since 1 May 2026 the discount is also tiered by battery size. Smaller home batteries get the full rate. Very large batteries get much less on their extra capacity:
- First 14 kWh: full discount, about $258 per kWh
- 14 to 28 kWh: 60% of the full rate, about $155 per kWh
- 28 to 50 kWh: 15% of the full rate, about $39 per kWh
Here is roughly what that means for common battery sizes installed before the end of 2026:
- 10 kWh battery: about $2,580 off
- 13.5 kWh battery (the size of a Tesla Powerwall 3): about $3,490 off
- 25 kWh battery: about $5,320 off
These are estimates. They assume certificates sell for around $38 each, and that price moves up and down. Your quote should show the exact discount for your battery.
The discount drops every six months
The number of certificates each kWh earns is set to fall every six months until the program ends in 2030. The current rate applies to installs from May to December 2026. The next cut is on 1 January 2027.
For a 10 kWh battery, that cut is worth about $420. In other words, the same battery is likely to cost around $400 more if it is installed in January instead of December. The discount keeps falling each half year after that.
That does not mean you should rush into the wrong battery. It does mean that if you were already planning one, getting a quote this year makes sense.
Who can get the federal battery discount?
Most Brisbane homes with solar will qualify. The main rules are:
- Homes, businesses and community organisations can all claim it.
- The battery must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh. The discount only counts the first 50 kWh.
- The battery must be installed with solar, either new panels or a system you already have. Batteries that only charge from the grid do not qualify.
- The battery and inverter must be on the Clean Energy Council approved products list.
- The battery must be able to join a virtual power plant (VPP). You do not have to join one.
- The installer must be accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia and must be on site for the install.
- It covers one battery system per property.
Portable batteries and electric cars do not count.
Is there a Queensland battery rebate in 2026?
No. Queensland's old Battery Booster rebate is closed, and there is no state battery rebate or loan in 2026. The federal discount is the only one available to Brisbane homes right now.
Be careful with older articles and ads that still mention Battery Booster. That money is no longer on offer.
How to claim the battery rebate in Brisbane
- Get a quote from an accredited installer. The quote should list the battery, its usable capacity and the discount amount.
- Check the battery is on the approved list. A good installer will only offer approved products.
- Book the install. Our own SAA accredited electricians install the battery and handle the paperwork.
- Pay the lower price. The installer creates and claims the certificates. You never deal with them yourself.
Is a battery worth it now?
For many Brisbane homes, yes. Feed-in tariffs in South East Queensland are low, so sending spare solar to the grid earns very little. A battery lets you keep that power and use it at night, when electricity costs the most.
Whether it pays off for you depends on how much power you use after dark, your electricity plan and the size of your solar system. Our guide to solar battery costs in Brisbane walks through the numbers. If you want to understand why exporting solar pays so little, read our guide to feed-in tariffs in South East Queensland.
